While radar is the most commonly used device to measure speed, law enforcement agencies in the state of Florida also do have other options when it comes measuring one’s speed. Some of these are used alone and others are used in combination with radar to ensure the highest level of accuracy possible. One of these is by the use of an average speed calculators. While this is approved in the state of Florida, it is rarely or ever used. An average speed calculator will be used to determine the speed of a moving vehicle between tow points and will take the average miles per hour to determine the speed that one was going. This is still an effective use of speed measuring in other states, but one will not see this used very often in Florida.
The three main companies who supply average speed calculations for the law enforcement agencies of Florida are as follows, Federal Sign and Safety, Kustom Electronics and Traffic Safety Systems. These are small portable computers that work like a calculator to determine the speed between two points. Out of all the companies, the most popular device is call ed the Vascar II and is commonly used in states such as Pennsylvania, but as stated earlier very rarely in Florida.
Stopwatches are also another approved speed measuring device for use by the law enforcement officials in the state of Florida. These are generally used in combination with radar and often times a stopwatch is used to track a motorists speed from aircraft. The pilot will use a stopwatch as he radio’s down to the land car. Both of the two will measure one’s speed using radar as well as the stopwatch. In order for this to hold up in a court of law, Florida does require that both the officer and the pilot be present and both signatures need to be on all documents. In order for a stopwatch to be considered a proper and accurate speed measurement device it does have to be tested to ensure the watch is calibrated properly. The following is a list of all the approved brands and models of stopwatches that law enforcement agencies in Florida may use, Casio ( HS-10W), Heuer ( 1000 and 1010), Seiko (S022-5009 and 87-0019G ), Accusplit ( 620-CT), Aristo ( Apollo), Lorus (w903), and Marshall Browning Interntaional Corp ( Robic Acutak sc-800).
